ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 analyzes and discusses adult recollections of childhood experiences of school place through a survey of students majoring in architecture. The childhood school environments shown in the memory sketch of adults were divided into two markedly different groups: detailed rich memory and poor description with negative memory. Places related to a poor memory tend to be functional realms while the places embedding rich memories tend to belong to a conceived realm showing the spatial configurations related to the Place Generator, such as “boundary,” “center,” “path,” “threshold,” and “edge,” introduced in Chapter 2 of this book. Among the various physical attributes mentioned in the adult survey regarding memory place in their childhood school environment, one of the obvious tendencies found is the dominance of outdoor places.
