ABSTRACT

Strategic planning can take place on several different levels. A constituent project to construct a high-voltage electrical transmission line can require specific strategic planning aimed at overcoming objections raised by particular stakeholders. Strategic planning is based on an understanding of the organisation’s internal and external environments; this can be acquired by gathering data, analysing it, and interpreting the results. The strategic process may take a long or a short time, depending on the circumstances, available know-how, commitment, scale and complexity required, and level of urgency. Special timelines and processes may apply to strategic planning related to particular projects or sub-elements of projects. The organisation’s culture may represent internal resource if it has been developing over a long time and can play a big part in the formation and implementation of a strategy. A good strategic planning report is a living document, which serves as a guideline for the board and executives of an enterprise.
