ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the comedic response to Bill Clinton’s presidency, as well as the very long arc of Hillary Clinton sketch comedy. Emerging as the “cool” saxophone-playing president, Clinton redefined the White House’s relationship with late-night television, while also becoming a staple of late-night comedy. His outsized personality and penchant for scandals, coupled with the emergence of conservative news and the bifurcation of audiences through cable television, Clinton became the perfect foil. With most jokes centered on his affair with Monica Lewinsky, Clinton’s satiric persona became intimately tied to his personal failings.
