ABSTRACT

The government proposes to revise Working Together to take account of the need to refocus child protection services. The sea-change necessitated by the Children Act on so many principles required a massive commitment to training to become familiar with the provisions of the Act and to begin to develop commitment to them on the part of practising professionals. There has emerged a degree of consensus in child protection between professionals in child abuse. The main message according to the document is that 'child protection work must be placed firmly within the context of wider services for children in need'. Presumably as part of the political context of targeting services for those most in need, the government at the time saw no need for extra funding: it was going to be a more cost-effective use of existing funds.
