ABSTRACT

The first problem to consider is how does one study the philosophy of mathematics. The great names in the history of the subject, such as E. Husserl, G. Frege, Cantor, Peano, David Hilbert, Whitehead and B. Russell, and in more modern times Godel and Michael Dummett, were all trained as mathematicians. The fundamental concept of mathematics is that of number. Once that is established, one naturally has to use the texts of other people on the subject. The foundation of any theory of logic is the judgement. A more sophisticated method is often used to count the number of people attending meetings or on a train or perhaps at their church. A counting device is used — a button is pressed as each person enters and a number is indicated on a dial, the number increasing in sequence as the button is pressed. The children are being prepared for doing business, since money has to be counted and wares too.
