ABSTRACT

Many women talked about how business are very male-oriented, citing the glass ceiling and lack of female role models, as well as the inflexibility of the working environment for mothers of young children. For many women it seemed too much of an uphill struggle to try to change these traditional corporations from within. Instead, they left to set up their own rules and culture. In this chapter, the authors explore this issue in more depth by looking at: why corporations are losing great talent, the need for women to lean in and for corporations and governments to lean out, and the benefits to women of helping other women. Many of our female entrepreneurs commented on being encouraged in their careers by successful men rather than successful women. Many women don’t want to attend events after work because they want to be at home with their families.
