ABSTRACT

Failure, as well as success, is an inherent part of our natural world – and a huge learning opportunity for those who embrace it. Yet failure can be seen as negative and something to avoid. Human nature can make failure feel, at best, uncomfortable and, at worst, unacceptable. Yet, successful entrepreneurs embrace failure alongside success. Failure can be seen by many as negative. Some people talk about not starting a business as they are frightened that they will fail. Some failures may only require small course corrections – such as getting out of a weak product line or marketing channel. Others may need full-on surgery – such as closing down business arms, shedding people who are surplus to requirements or changing the company direction into a new area. In the short term, failure may cause a temporary blip or set-back.
