ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an overview of Generation Z’s perspectives on money – getting it, saving it, and spending it, along with factors shaping those perspectives. The chapter begins with an overview of the economic climate during their childhoods – the recession, housing bubble, and high unemployment rates – and continues with a discussion of the mounting college debt necessary to earn a college degree, the future of their working years, and retirement. In addition, this chapter includes Generation Z’s views on the American Dream, homeownership, investing, online banking, credit, and other monetary transactions and how their financial behavior might impact the larger economic landscape.
