ABSTRACT

Within an organizational and managerial context failure is often seen as a blaming opportunity. In this chapter we argue that very few causes of failures are causes for blame, and instead most failures are opportunities for learning and change. We discuss how to analyze and deal with failures, and how to bounce back from them. We propose that by getting to the root causes of failures, learning opportunities and solutions can be developed and proposed. Using these lessons within an environment of collaborative and forward-thinking individuals helps one to bounce back, gain courage, and to increase self-confidence, and to prevent fall backs and making the same mistakes. At the same time, we propose that creativity and innovation go hand in hand with failures and mistakes. We argue that forging new paths implies taking risks and accepting the possibility of failure.
