ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the corporate relationship with nature through the lens of western environmental philosophy. It explores how western environmental philosophy is conveyed in contemporary corporate reports. The dominant theme evident during the interview with an environmental sustainability manager at Zeta is dualism. Gamma communicates its environmental impact most commonly in terms of a dualistic approach, with some exceptions. The interview with a senior environmental manager in Gamma is one example of a participant who expressed a good deal of dualism, in similar proportion to the environmental reports. Beta’s environmental reports demonstrate a bias towards looking at the natural environment as separate and distinct from human life. Environmental risk is similarly discussed not in terms of risks to the environment, but risks posed to the company as a consequence of climate changes.
