ABSTRACT

In 2016, Statistics New Zealand established a global first by providing an official statistical standard for gender identity that offers guidance for the collection, analysis and reporting of official statistics on gender identity. New Zealand has ratified a number of international conventions relating to non-discrimination and fundamental rights for all citizens, including minority groups. Restrictions on the exercise of this right have been most usually on the grounds of prohibition where the purpose is deemed criminal or likely to present a threat to public order or safety. Some of the family support strategies pioneered in New Zealand – such as kinship adoption for children and family conferences – have contributed greatly to informing modern professional practice in the developed countries. The generally open and accepting social attitudes towards sexual orientation and gender identity atters is increasingly evident across the range of New Zealand sports, with the All Blacks rugby demonstrating leadership in this field.
