ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the idea of principles versus protocol in therapeutic practice and then introduces the NAVIGATES acronym as an aid to practising CBT+. The NAVIGATES acronym assumes the therapist has at least the client’s active and informed consent and willingness to proceed with therapy. The dialectic here is that the protocol itself is intended to be very flexible and open to modification and change. It is not necessary to proceed in a simple linear fashion. The process of therapy needs to change in response to emerging information and changing circumstances in the client’s life, the outside world and the therapeutic relationship. Skills for identifying and handling thoughts, feelings, physiological reactions and behaviour are taught throughout the book using techniques from CBT, DBT, ACT and CFT.
