ABSTRACT

Stuart was a bus driver, happily married with two children. He had flash-backs of the accident, which felt so real he almost believed that he was back in the accident, seeing his children in their car seats dead. Flash-backs tended to happen in the evenings when Stuart was with the children before they went to bed. If Stuart tried to drive the family car he experienced high levels of anxiety that made him feel sick, with a fast heart-beat, sweating and feelings of panic. Stuart could not continue with his job as a bus driver and eventually lost his job altogether. This caused financial problems and his relationship with Ellie was extremely stressed. Stuart’s therapist recognised that due to a traumatic event his ability to follow his values had been destroyed. Stuart valued being the man of the house, a husband and dad who could provide for and protect his family.
