ABSTRACT

Problems of motivation and commitment are often a great challenge to therapists, and can lead into the trap of persuading, cajoling and generally working harder than the client. This chapter introduces ways to deal with commitment at the outset and throughout therapy. Many of us have personal learning histories, including failing to meet our own or others’ goals; being betrayed, abandoned and let down; being abused and taken advantage of; being taught that we are worthless; and disappointing others and letting them down. CFT also comes from a very validating and nurturing place at the outset of therapy. DBT offers a variety of ‘commitment strategies’ derived from motivational interviewing and from sales techniques. Before starting on therapy, in CBT+ we recommend having several commitment, pre-therapy sessions, using commitment strategies and building self-compassion and willingness.
