ABSTRACT

Central to D and central to Moore’s philosophy as a whole are the expressions of common sense or everyday life. Moore used the term ‘expression’ as an umbrella term for words, phrases, and sentences. The ‘designation linguistic’ analysis has been used to describe the work of philosophers who believe that philosophical problems are not substantive but only the result of confusion over word usage. Accordingly, to untangle the terminology of a philosophical conundrum in such a way as to return the words used technically by the philosopher to their home in ordinary language is tantamount to evaporating the very problems the words in question had themselves engendered. A revolutionary feature of Moore’s philosophy is its motivating force, or that which presented philosophical problems to him. The pre-Socratics were driven to discover the arche, the first principle, origin, or beginning of all things, the essential nature of each of the objects of human experience.
