ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyses through the process of informing oneself about research, using research, contributing to the research community, and sharing the outcomes of their research and conclusions with others as part of a broader movement. Research can be an empowering process, allowing a teacher to change aspects of their practice on the basis of evidence. However, in order to be empowering, the teacher must remain the decision maker. One initial principle is that in order for evidence-based practice to work, the teacher needs to at least have a role in setting the research agenda. The book describes how to ensure that teacher-led research projects are ethical and valid, and sets out the various methodology options available for running your own full-scale research study.
