ABSTRACT

The World Bank projects that the most severe socioeconomic impacts are likely to be caused by climate conditions that affect those living in coastal regions where inhabitants face a world where climate change will threaten the food supplies and water resources of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and South East Asia. In many urban regions, a 'dystopian urban vision' is being created – especially in Asian and sub-Saharan African nations – that is far removed from aspirations outlined in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 'Global strategy on human resources for health' focuses on policy options for WHO Member States, responsibilities of the WHO Secretariat and recommendations for other stakeholders on how to optimize the health workforce to accelerate progress towards universal health coverage and the SDG. The urgency of tackling the basic health infrastructure in existing and emerging cities is made clear by the increasing threat posed by antimicrobial resistance to infections caused by antibiotics or antimicrobials.
