ABSTRACT

In all forms of education and training, a single picture can convey a large amount of information. Illustrations in computer-based learning can take many forms including: photographs, graphics, cartoons, and analogies. Logical graphics such as histograms, pie charts, time series graphs, tables of information and bar charts, do not resemble the physical things they represent but are a logical representation of them. The degree of resemblance may vary from a photograph to an outline drawing of the object and includes cartoons and other graphic images. Analogies provide the learners with a way of making a link to their previous experience and knowledge. They consider the new material in contrast with their existing understanding. This is a powerful way of aiding learning if the learners can recognize the relationship between the analogical illustration and their previous experience.
