ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the process of creating a lighting design by investigating three concepts: the design process, the image of light, and the lighting key. Commitment is the most important step in the whole design process. The analysis step in the design process has two objectives: gathering information that will help clarify and refine the definition of the challenge students are facing and identifying areas that will require further research. Analyze the script, question the director, question the other members of the production design team, and question the producer. Conceptual research involves devising multiple solutions to specific design challenges. The selection phase of the design process is finished when the director feels satisfied that all design areas support the production design concept. Evaluation takes place within each step of the design process, and it also occurs when the project is completed. The implementation phase begins when students stop planning and start doing.
