ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the effects that can be achieved by manipulating two of the controllable qualities of light—distribution and intensity—to affect the functions of light: visibility, selective focus, modeling, and mood. The lighting key is used by the designer as a primary guide for determining the hanging positions of the lights and can be an effective tool when discussing the design with other members of the production design team. When analyzing a photo, or a stage picture, it is almost impossible to discuss one quality or function of light without touching on another. While the selection and placement of the instruments and the setting of intensities for the individual lights are of primary importance in the recreation of the image of light, the selection of color will greatly enhance the overall mood and feeling of the scene. The selection of other colors will create different psychological impacts on the audience.
