ABSTRACT

Peter Van Inwagen and Trenton Merricks are both influential eliminativists who embrace one form or another of exceptionalism. Van Inwagen makes an exception for living entities and Merricks makes an exception for conscious organisms. But such exceptions are not necessary. There are problems involved in these two brands of exceptionalism, and they can be avoided by embracing a full-blown non-exceptionalist eliminativist worldview.
