ABSTRACT

Suppose that the Self exists. Is it better understood as a Cartesian substance or as a Humean bundle? We will see that there is much less of a difference between these two views than what is usually thought – they are largely merely terminological variants. Thus, it does not make any significant difference to embrace one or the other. As a consequence, from the point of view of the metaphysician, the competition of the no-Self view (defended in the next chapter) shrinks to one enemy rather than two. On our way, we will see some of the core features that a Self is supposed to have, which the no-Self view will then be required to account for as well.
