ABSTRACT

As a modern nation state, Nepal evokes ambiguous sentiments. Despite its experience of never having been colonised, its abundant natural resources, and numerous movements for socioeconomic and political change, it remains one of the least developed nations in the world. This chapter critically examines the involvement of International non-government organisations (INGOs) in Nepal's development their contribution and the progress made. Nepal has witnessed never-ending setbacks because of the nation’s snail-pace development, contentious political agenda, and poor service delivery. INGOs, as global actors, are visible from New York to the least developed centres of Asia and Africa. Their goals are to promote development, enhance good governance, sustain democracy, and advocate for an egalitarian society. Yet, it is difficult to define INGOs because of their polymorphic nature. Although they collectively serve humanitarian goals, influenced by various international development policies and agenda, they exhibit diverse interests and wide-ranging views of development.
