ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a critical commentary on the process of introducing video recorded interviews and on their effectiveness in practice from the perspective of a local authority social services department. We look at the experience of one local authority in implementing the Memorandum of Good Practice on Video Recorded Interviews with Child Witnesses for Criminal Proceedings (Home Office, 1992) and contrast this with the national surveys and debate on the value of the new arrangements. We concentrate primarily on practice in the field and on the frameworks for policy and practice guiding video recording and upon its effects on children and professionals.
