ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses open educational resources (OER) as an alternative means to achieving access to education and explores the possibility of Nigeria utilizing OER to boost the Nigerian education sector. It explores the evolution and meaning of open educational resources, as well as the rationale for building tools that would grant free access to educational resources. The role played by the law in open educational resources is explained with emphasis on licensing and policies. Challenges faced in developing and using OER are also addressed, and suggestions are made on how best to avoid loopholes. OER and massive open online courses are also highlighted, and the conclusion provides a glimpse into the future of OER.
