ABSTRACT

Health professional's behaviour is likely to be affected by symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and dissociative phenomena. As with other changes in behaviour, it can feel risky to do something different, especially if the potential consequence is being thrown into that horrific feeling of shame. If health professionals have a disorganised attachment style, they probably use methods of control, either coercive or seductive, in order to make people do what they want them to. Health professional's brain has learned that there is no reliable strategy to ensure their carer will keep them safe and so their brain tries to keep they safe by making they take control. One of the hardest things to do if health professionals have an insecure or disorganised attachment style is to repair relationships when there has been a falling out of some kind. It is difficult whoever is to blame or if it is no-one’s fault. It takes courage to make the first move.
