ABSTRACT

John Bowlby observed that adults tend to choose partners whose attachment style fits with the one they developed during childhood. Sexual activity is clearly related to the survival of our species and forms an important part of romantic relationships. Listen attentively to health professional’s prospective partner, which conveys a sense of trustworthiness and encourages the partner to be open. As partner becomes more of an attachment figure, strategies from our primary attachment style are likely to emerge, particularly during times of difficulty. People with an anxious attachment style tend to increase their expressions of need, fearing that otherwise their attachment figure will not meet these. Professional’s self-focus means they are less likely to notice a partner’s low mood, and so may miss signs that their partner needs care. Having a secure style enables health professional’s to trust a partner, which facilitates relaxing and enjoying sex, so it becomes more satisfying.
