ABSTRACT

The contemporaneous historian, Josephus is by far our most important source of information on Agrippa II, with a few more snippets of information supplied by other ancient writers (notably Suetonius, Tacitus, Dio Cassius, Juvenal, the author of the Book of Acts of the Apostles), inscriptions and coins. The reliability of Josephus is reviewed and critically assessed both for consistency and as measured against other sources. It is acknowledged that Josephus cannot be regarded as entirely objective particularly because his writings have strong apologetic and rhetorical overtones. However, it is argued that, if the information from Josephus is used judiciously, it is possible to extract a credible portrait of Agrippa II.
