ABSTRACT

A concise account of the course of the Jewish-Roman War is presented, based primarily on the testimony provided by Josephus, supplemented by other sources, topographical information and up-to-date archaeological findings. This chapter follows the initial phase of the War, which concludes with unsuccessful expedition to Jerusalem, headed by the Roman governor of Syria, Cestius Gallus. Meanwhile, the Judaean insurrection spread to Jewish areas of Agrippa’s realm, which the monarch was unable to contain or suppress without external support.
