ABSTRACT
Trade unions form the basis of the Labour Party. They were the rock on which it was founded in 1900. Their loyalty saved it in 1931 during the crisis provoked by the infamous MacDonaldite “betrayal,” as many termed it. During 1945–51 the majority of trade unions gave the Attlee governments massive, unswerving and crucial backing.
