ABSTRACT

As already stated in the ‘Preface’, my collecting of teenage oral narratives began in a somewhat haphazard way alongside my work as a professional storyteller. As a result the working methodologies evolved during the process and were adapted as the study progressed. I would, therefore, by way of introduction to the material, like to spend some little time setting the definitions and limitations of this study, specifically to define the terms ‘teenage’, ‘oral’, and ‘narrative’, and also look at some of the general problems of collection, transcription and classification.
