ABSTRACT

This chapter considers whether engagement is a fad or fashion and critically examines the concept of Organizational Change (OC) engagement. It discusses the ethical implications of OC engagement and identifies the cross-cultural perspectives of OC engagement. The debate about whether engagement is a fad or fashion has led to concerns about the dark side of engagement, the idea that perhaps engagement is not always a good thing. Critics of engagement also question whether employees can become too engaged. In contrast, the managerial perspective on engagement tends to ignore the implications of over engagement for those so engaged and/or paint an overly rosy picture of high engagement which fails to consider the reality that many employees actually face. Continuous OC engagement may come at a cost to the health of individuals and organizations. The pursuit of OC engagement may involve work intensification or over engagement that can actually diminish employee well-being and result in stress and disengagement thus raising ethical issues.
