Stagira was probably located on the northern Aegean coast in Macedonia, in the newer, rougher world of Thrace, whose Chalcidic peninsula had long been colonized by Greeks. There is no certainty as to whether we should regard Aristotle as having been born in a Macedonian, Greek, or Thracian town, or one that represented a joint enterprise, perhaps by neighbouring Greek islands. In any event, the Greek cities of this region had banded together in a powerful league which struggled to keep Greek independence and ideals from being crushed by the rising power of Macedon. Constant support from the Greek cities to the South was necessary and influenced, no doubt, Aristotle's later contempt for non-Grecian ways and institutions.
