ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the issue of method is brought to the fore. The chapter has two parts, addressing complementary questions: How to investigate search and searching and how to use search engines for research. In part one, problems are discussed related to method when attempting to study processes that are largely invisible and often taken for granted. Here, the chapter draws on the tradition of information science research for studying information in society. The chapter’s shorter second part deals with some approaches to using search engines as tools for research with a view to studying the informational texture of issues and various informational dynamics in society.
