ABSTRACT

The ‘crit’ is another of the big ideas in design education. It is a very common and powerful way of performing a number of tasks that can increase the student’s understanding of design. However, these crits can also be damaging, leaving students confused or demotivated and resulting in wasted time and effort. The nature and multiple purposes of the crit are explored. Ways of redesigning the crit in order to eliminate some of its potentially damaging features are discussed. Some problems of design project assessment are also discussed here.
