ABSTRACT

Designers appear to be highly dependent on drawings to further their process. However, this may in part be due to the fact that drawings are left behind as a record. In fact, designers depend just as much, if not more, on words and conversations. There is seldom any record of these but they take place all the time. These conversations, and the way each kind of designer needs to learn the language used by their peers, are explored here. Some examples of this are given for architects, automobile stylists, fashion designers and others. The tricky problem of holding designerly conversations with computers is explored.
