ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the way designers can generate alternative ideas. This leads to questions about whether alternatives should be shown to clients as part of the design process. We see that this is almost a fundamental principle for some designers, while others are rather more cautious and see it as a potential for solutions that fail to have coherence as clients cherry-pick from many alternatives. Ways of how to deliberately generate alternatives are explored and illustrated by examples from some famous designers. The possible role of computers is explored and the idea of parametric design is introduced.
