ABSTRACT

Following on from the previous chapter, a new set of ways of having alternative design visions is introduced. We call this ‘parallel lines of thought’. In such cases, a designer may pursue more than one possible design strategy in parallel. How this is done is shown by examples from famous designers. The problem of managing such a sophisticated process is discussed. In particular, we explore how long such parallel lines of thought may be kept separate and then how and why to bring them together or abandon some in favour of others.
