ABSTRACT

The final chapter takes readers on beyond their design course and design school. A simple model of design project, design process and design practice is introduced in order to study design in a professional setting. An important new dimension here is that design may become a much more collaborative enterprise. Two quite distinct ways of collaborating in practice are explored. We also explore ways of evaluating professionally practiced collaborative design. A model used to evaluate the success of a design project in this professional setting is introduced. It relies on the three ideas of product, process and performance. These are discussed and then lead on to three quite different versions of how a project process may have gone. These are ‘intentions’, ‘practices’ and ‘aspirations’. These are then used to develop a project evaluation system that can be used for post-project evaluation. The complex world of understanding design in a professional context has begun. It will be a lifetime project of learning and developing.
