ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book is based around four broadly historical referents and two further postwar political contexts. These themes are: discrimination, solidarity, representation and hegemony. The themes run through the chapters, connecting the different periods. The book shows how they developed through different historical periods, and how they connect different facets of antiracist discourse and practice. It attempts to synthesise these four themes into a more precise characterisation of antiracism. This is articulated around one of the key ideas of author study, namely that antiracism is indissociably linked to a wider project for social justice. The book discusses some of the limitations of this work and areas of further research. It then outlines some of the implications of author work for the future of antiracism. Further work is needed to identify on what basis a viable global antiracist project might develop.
