ABSTRACT

The chapter looks at a number of suggestions in order to show that impartialism is a theory about moral right and wrong as well as about justice. Ben appears to have greater power than Ann because he, presumably, is able to put his threat to torture her into operation whereas there seems to be little she can do to stop him. Although Ben may have the greater power in the real world, it remains the case that he cannot guarantee to win the dispute with Ann. Impartialists will condone the use of force in the real world if it is used to ensure compliance with the principles agreed to in the position of equal power. When, and how, force should be used in the real world to ensure obedience to impartialist principles is itself a question to be debated from an equal power perspective.
