ABSTRACT

Not all individuals who may be falling out of romantic love (FORL) use those words to describe their concerns or experience. Chapter 12 is a thorough assessment and treatment tool for helping professionals working in the context of intimate partner relationships. The recommendations provided in this chapter are supported by the author’s extensive research and clinical experience, corroborating and extending previous work.

Research shows that couple’s therapy provides positive results for a majority of participating couples. That’s the good news. Unfortunately, because of limited research on the topic, professionals in the trenches have few resources to call on for education and training in respect to FORL. Many of the traditional techniques are ineffective because they aren’t designed for those who have FORL.

Assessment and treatment planning recommendations applicable to FORL are included, as are therapeutic frameworks, clinical techniques, and interventions specific to emotional intimacy, sexual desire, and commitment. Suggestions are offered regarding what to do when one or both partners are leaning out of the relationship or have decided to divorce.
