ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates the methodological stance of the project. It presents a brief outline of general considerations in regard to methodology. The chapter outlines the tradition of qualitative study in social science research. It explains the nature of the research methods used. The chapter examines specific details of the research project, principally in relation to the semi-structured interview programme which was the main device employed. It also outlines the role of Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis (CAQDAS). The chapter also explains the nature, potentials and difficulties of CAQDAS and provides a detailed account of the manner in which it was used in this particular project. Social science research, including the study of management, work and organizations, has been disposed to polarize around two broad traditions, those of positivistic and phenomenological research. Coding is at the heart of CAQDAS. Having identified the codes to be used is only the beginning of the complexities encountered in undertaking CAQDAS.
