ABSTRACT

In Fabian and other socialist publications some Labour Party members have already seen that the end of the last Labour Government marked the end of an era of thinking within the party, and are already posing future problems which will have to be solved by the next Labour Government. Equally, the step from political activity to being aligned politically with one party, may seem too many to be an inevitable step, but again the trade union experiences of the 1964–70 Labour Government did lead many trade unionists to think deeply about the trade union links with the Labour Party. What we therefore need at present in the Labour movement is a fresh statement of the problems in our society today. Many in the Labour Party will find it impossible to think out the different policies without first charting their political direction.
