ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of Creative Play Therapy which is an adaptation of play therapy for use with adolescents and adults. Traditional talk therapy is not always effective for every adolescent or adult. Creative Play Therapy utilizes expressive arts and play techniques in a psychologically safe therapeutic relationship to facilitate self-awareness and healing. While based in a client-centered foundation, Creative Play Therapy also utilizes prompts and direction to help clients work on core needs through externalizing internal experiences. The chapter presents how Creative Play Therapy meets the definition of play therapy and provides an overview of the seven stages of Creative Play Therapy.
