ABSTRACT

In this chapter, authors discuss the importance of assessing clients’ spirituality in order to understand fully all of the clients’ resources. Terminology is provided to clarify the discussion. How does trauma influence clients’ spiritual beliefs and how has this altered their lives? The authors’ ideas of core needs as presented earlier in the book are discussed in the context of spirituality and how they relate to clients’ existential questions. Creative Play Therapy can be utilized to help clients externalize complex spiritual questions so they can be explored in the safe therapeutic space. Ideas such as exploring purpose and redeeming personal pain are explored. Ethical considerations are discussed as it is important for the therapist to handle clients’ spirituality appropriately. Sample dialogue in the context of a case example is given, and Creative Play Therapy techniques are presented.
