ABSTRACT

In this chapter, authors present the goals and strategies of the Creation stage of Creative Play Therapy. In this stage, launching from a therapist prompt, clients will create a product allowing the use of symbols to substitute for concrete reality, which allows clients to share their internal experience and emotions from a safe distance. Sample dialogue of a case example are presented to demonstrate a prompt and the use of active listening skills to help a client verbalize the internal experience represented in the product. Considerations are presented to assist the therapist in providing scaffolding around clients so that they have enough structure to know how to start creating but not too many rules to stifle their right-brained creativity. Sample prompts within each expressive arts category are given.
