ABSTRACT

In her constant search to find herself Caroline was reading widely – any books that might be helpful for us to use in therapy. In that respect she was always “the author's partner” in the search for her identity. Her belief in the value of the written words as possible mediators to her experience was one of her strongest assets. Winnicott’s writings confront Caroline with the importance of not only feelings, but the feeling of pleasure. Caroline has always associated pleasure with eroticization and her “badness” but Winnicott’s writing opened a small window that allowed her to now “play with the idea” of there being the possibility of fun in living. Legitimizing and recognizing the importance of having feelings, including anger influenced Caroline’s functioning in the outside world. Caroline was able to act in her environment in a self-enhancing way because she was now able to be in touch with her feelings, including her feelings of anger.
