ABSTRACT

Urban neighborhood branch libraries are satellites of larger central libraries that provide localized access to popular materials, services, and programs for everyday use. They come in a range of sizes but, given site constraints of the urban environment, tend to be compact, efficiently organized, and typically one or two stories in height. Design features inside reflect the influence of the earlier Carnegie libraries, but with more extensive open planning for flexibility and multiuse of limited space, more accessible and attractively displayed collections, and a greater variety of integrated spaces for a broader range of library activities. Architecturally, within the urban neighborhood setting, elements of the built environment are the predominant contextual references. Buckhead Library in Atlanta is a suburban neighborhood branch of the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library system, serving the Buckhead area of the city, north of downtown.
