ABSTRACT

Collocated libraries, additions, and modernizations present special opportunities for development, incorporating comprehensive strategies for consolidated planning and design, in association with related community programs and activities. Collocated facilities are those in which the library is part of a larger community-use complex, combined, for example, with a community center, neighborhood service center, or academic library. Ballard Library, in northwest Seattle, is an urban neighborhood branch of the Seattle Public Library system, collocated with a neighborhood center that provides local municipal services for the community. Inside, the library’s main reading room is an open multiuse space, with designated areas for library services, adult collections and reading, and a children’s library that features a corner bay window for special activities. Palo Verde Library, in the west Phoenix neighborhood of Maryvale, is a suburban branch of the Phoenix Public Library system, collocated with a community center operated by the city’s parks and recreation department.
